Knitwear & circular knitting

Circular and flat knitting mills run on needles, sinkers and cams — the three families where a worn part shows up in the fabric before it shows up as a breakdown.

A knitting machine tells you it needs parts through the cloth: a dropped stitch line, a needle track, a change in fabric weight. By the time a needle actually breaks, it has usually been marking the fabric for a while.
